Congress is split. Republicans have the majority in the House, Democrats in the Senate. Checks and balances should be well satisfied by this configuration. Bills usually receive bipartisan attention and compromises are often made in a split Congress. But that is not what happens in 2012 and beyond. One party, the Republican Party, has agreed to team up with special interest groups such as Evangelicals and the Koch web of Conservative organizations to pass laws that further their agenda.
